Enjoying Milos – December 29th, 1917

Saturday Dec 29th, 1917

Lovely sunrise, beautiful sky ruby red, sea light blue and destroyer jet black, also islands in distance.  Sea lovely.  Aegean Sea and arrived at Milos 10:46.  Ships and fleet in bay, buildings of junker white. Left Milos 5:30pm. Dismissed guard 5pm.

Frank is obviously feeling very poetic today.  Anyone who has travelled to the Cyclades can understand his reaction to his new surroundings.  The white and blue buildings he saw are typical of the islands even now. That, together with the natural harbour (actually a sunken volcanic crater), probably means that the view he was enjoying hasn’t changed much in the last 100 years.

This photograph was taken on the island and conjures up an idea of what Frank might have been seeing, albeit from the ship rather than from the shore.
